The Mercer Island Saddle Club offers
composted horse manure to gardeners free of charge year round. The club
uses a hot composting method to speed the rotting of the manure, which
is offered to the public roughly every two months. Besides horse manure,
the compost contains small amounts (around 5 percent) of wood shavings
from the horses’ stalls and sandy gravel from the paddocks and grounds.
Gardeners may pick up the compost at the
Club grounds seven days a week during daylight hours. The club entrance
is on the right side of Island Crest Way, just south of the intersection
of Island Crest Way and 68th Street. The compost is contained
in wood pallet “bins” just to the left of the entrance gate. Please
bring your own shovels and containers.
