The
Mercer Island Saddle Club was organized in approximately 1967 by a
handful of dedicated horse enthusiasts. For the first few years there
were two outdoor rings surrounded by a pole fence with little or no
footing. The original dues at this time were $1 a month. In 1969 members
signed an agreement with the Mercer Island Community Club (now known as
Pioneer Park Youth Club) and the Mercer Island Country Club agreeing to
the construction of a 20-stall barn with space for feed, manure, and
shavings. Three years later, the barn, cook shack, jump shed/judge’s
stand were built.
In
1988, plans were put in place for the construction of the indoor arena.
Thanks to the support of financial of two Mercer Island Saddle Club
families, the indoor arena was built and funding was secured for
leveling the base of the outside arena to resolve the severe drainage
problem. Crushed recycled concrete donated by the I-90 project, fabric
cloth for erosion control and preservation, sand, a sprinkler system, a
new fence, and lighting were completed at this time.
The
Mercer Island Saddle Club has existed through the cooperation of its
dedicated members and their hard work. In return the club membership has
been affordable to members who board their horses at the barn, lease a
horse, or take lessons at Mercer Island Saddle Club.
